🎉Congratulations to @ccapoban for an amazing 20 years at SAMS! • The Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP), one of the world’s most biodiverse collections, is marking 20 years here at SAMS in Oban.

Since its arrival in 2004, the historic collection has grown by 1,303 strains and over 13,000 samples have been sent to researchers, schools, and businesses in more than 100 countries—from the Azores to Gambia and Fiji.

CCAP’s collection, which includes microalgae, protozoa, and seaweed, supports research in everything from medicine to sustainable food and beauty products.

Join us online for a fascinating seminar by SAMS marine mammal researcher Nienke Van Geel (SAMS) who will talk about bottlenose dolphins in the Sound of Barra and acoustic findings of marine mammals west of the Outer Hebrides.

This event is part of a four-talk series run by the Genesis Project, a community climate initiative exploring how climate change affects Scotland’s coastal communities.

📣Funded PhD opportunity at SAMS 🎄 Christmas Island land crabs 🦀"Combined effects of climate change and metal exposure to physiological adaptation in early life stages of Christmas Island land crabs in wetland ecosystems."

Christmas Island’s wetlands are globally significant but face threats from phosphate mining and climate-driven stressors. This project examines crab resilience to pollutants and climate impacts through lab and field studies. Partnering with @conventiononwetlands, JNCC, and @parksaustralia, it aims to inform conservation policy and adaptive management.

Supervisory team includes Dr Helena Reinardy of SAMS and Prof Alistair Boxall, @uniofyork and Dr Lucy Turner, @plymuni.

Essential skills include: molecular biology and/or physiological laboratory experience, experimental aquatic biology, field work, and data analyses.

📢 NEW FULLY-FUNDED PHD! • Building resilient Kelp cultivars via priming with multiple environmental stressors

Lead Supervisor/Director of Studies: Dr Puja Kumari
Supervisory Team: Dr Tim Regan, Prof. Michele Stanley
Application deadline: 6 January 2025 at noon, GMT

This PhD will combine physiology, fieldwork and bioinformatics to tackle key challenges in marine restoration and sustainable aquaculture while gaining diverse lab and field skills. Although based at SAMS, the successful candidate will be involved in field trials in Kilchoan.

The studentship aims to develop priming strategies in kelps to enhance stress resilience, understand the physiological, molecular and epigenetic adaptation mechanisms and test the developed stress resilience in field trials for ecosystem services.

The project is a part of E5 Doctoral Training Partnership with the @edinburghuniversity.

What a year it's been for SAMS and @thinkuhi stude

What a year it's been for SAMS and @thinkuhi student Logan Andrick, who devised a plan to build semi-autonomous robotic surface vehicles to capture plastic waste.

After winning a UHI Business Competition award, and partnering with accelerator programmes, he continues to develop his idea - all while completing his BSc Marine Science!
