Dark Oxygen - a deep-sea discovery

A team of scientists led by Prof. Andrew Sweetman of SAMS has discovered a new mechanism for oxygen production that requires no photosynthesis.

So-called ‘dark oxygen’ has been traced on the sea floor, 4,000 metres below the surface and has called into question how aerobic life on earth began…

📢 New Masters alert! 🔬👩‍🔬 We've launched a new and unique MRes in Marine Science that will benefit from the diversity of research at SAMS, a partner of @thinkuhi. Recruiting now for October 2024 intake.

The research programme offers students the flexibility to study a range of topics, from deep sea to coastal environments, including oceanography, biotechnology, marine governance and policy, plastic pollution, aquaculture and robotics.

Projects can range from blue sky science to applied research and can be field based, desktop or in labs.
