They’re back! 🐠 #RedSeaFieldTrip 2024 🪸 Undergraduate students studying Marine Science at SAMS, a partner of @thinkuhi, have returned from an unforgettable Tropical Marine Ecosystems field course in Egypt.

Students traded the cooler waters of Argyll for the tropical Red Sea where they expanded their understanding of diverse ecosystems, gaining insights ranging from coral reef surveys and fish diversity to mangrove conservation and microplastic surveys.

Edinburgh calling! Visitors to an event @dynamic_e

Edinburgh calling! Visitors to an event @dynamic_earth last week in Edinburgh were able to operate an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) 120 miles away at SAMS, thanks to a remote connection.

Using a camera in our robotics lab, the attendees at the North Sea 3D event in Edinburgh were able to navigate the ROV around our test tank.

The North Sea 3D research project is using ROVs and artificial intelligence to measure marine growth on structures. To find out more, see https://www.ns3d.co.uk/ or see link in bio.

📣 Funded PhD opportunity 🤖 "The application of #MachineLearning to establish baselines and assess change in sensitive marine habitats."

Are you a biologist with an aptitude for programming, or a data-scientist with an interest in ecology? We're offering a studentship to join an international team of researchers using automated (machine-learning) based image analysis to map benthos on the Greenlandic shelf and shelf edge.

The project is primarily based at SAMS in Oban, Scotland but you will also be based at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) in Nuuk, Greenland, and will attend at least one offshore research cruise on the Greenland shelf.

1st Year Marine Science Field Trip 🏞📝 In this reel, SAMS student Isadora (@thinkuhi) takes us on a field trip to explore the geomorphological features and geochemistry of the picturesque Blarcreen Burn and River Esragan. During this trip, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the river's impact on the salt water Loch Etive, looking at the geochemical processes of the loch and phytoplankton population. 💙

On #WorldMeteorologicalDay find out more about how the Atlantic Ocean dictates much of Earth's climate through a series of colossal currents known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.
The AMOC therefore has a major say on the weather in western Europe.

Scientists at SAMS use fixed moorings with sensors deep in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as robotic underwater vehicles known as gliders to gain insight how the AMOC may be affected by climate change and a warming ocean.
