Remembering today our former Director, the late Pr

Remembering today our former Director, the late Prof Graham Shimmield, who was born on this day in 1958.

Prof Shimmield, who died on Christmas Eve 2016, was at the helm of SAMS between 1996 and 2008 and transformed the institute. Much of what SAMS is today it owes to Graham’s vision.

Under his leadership we doubled the number of staff; developed the UHI BSc and PhD marine science programmes; built our ‘Sir John Murray’ main laboratory building; developed a business incubator for marine biotech, the seed corn for the European Marine Science Park; broadened SAMS’ research to include Arctic science, biotechnology and social science; and set up our main commercial subsidiary, now known as SAMS Enterprise.

He later continued his contribution to marine science as Director of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Maine, USA.

'Sea' you again, Adrian! 💙 The very best wishes

'Sea' you again, Adrian! 💙 The very best wishes from everyone at SAMS to Dr Adrian MacLeod, who is leaving us for pastures new.

During his 15-year association with SAMS, Adrian was a PhD student and also worked for our commercial company before returning to a research role, developing our experimental seaweed farm.

No surprise then, that Adrian will be joining the fledgling Scottish seaweed industry with a role at Atlantic Mariculture Ltd.

Among his leaving gifts was an aerial picture of his (not always) beloved SAMS seaweed farm.
